Kampuchea Balopp is proud to announce that current KB ambassador and French rugby player Brice Dulin will be visiting us in Phnom Penh, Cambodia at the end of June for a few days following his current tour of Australia with the French national team.
24 year old Brice Dulin has established himself as the first choice French Fullback and has already been capped more than 25 times since making his international debut in June 2012. Brice won the Top 14 French Championship in 2013 with Castres Olympique and lost the final in 2014 vs powerhouse Toulon with the same club. He has recently announced he will be switching to Top 14 side Racing Metro next season. Speed and reliability with the ball in hand are key features of Brice Dulin’s playing style.
On his first visit to Cambodia, Brice will be attending several sessions with the Kampuchea Balopp coaches and our partner NGO organisations to experience first hand what it is Kampuchea Balopp does in empowering youth development through rugby and witness the program he supports in action. On Brice’s trip, Kampuchea will be holding its second Grassroots Rugby Day of 2014, on Sunday June 29th with over 150 Cambodian kids. Please see our facebook event page for more information.
On Monday June 30th Brice and the KB coaches will run an exhibition training session with some selected kids from our NGO partners followed by a business lunch at the Sofitel in Phnom Penh. The Luncheon event is organised in partnership with the CCFC and Eurocham and will give the business community an opportunity to hear from Brice as well as see a presentation on Kampuchea Balopp. All proceeds from the event will go to Kampuchea Balopp and we will announce some special news at the lunch event. With the IRB Hong Kong 7s Rugby bringing together the global rugby alumni last weekend in Hong Kong, Kampuchea Balopp was a proud beneficiary of a dinner arranged by the Hong Kong Police Rugby Club and the Hong Kong Scottish Rugby Club on Tuesday 25th March in the lead up to the weekends 7s action.
The guest speakers on the night were former Scotland and British Irish Lions player Tom Smith and Kampuchea partner and friend and famous former French rugby player Serge Betsen. Serge’s own organisation the Serge Betsen Academy as well as Operation Breakthrough and the Bill McLaren Foundation were other beneficiaries on the night.
The night was a success for all involved and the Hong Kong Police also managed to serenade Serge Betsen as he was celebrating his birthday on the night. See the video here
Thanks again to everyone involved and your continues support.

In February, Australian student and rugby fan Mary Crowley, spent some time with Kampuchea Balopp to learn about what we do and to assist us with some of the training sessions and work with our coaches on improving their English language skills. Mary made a significant contribution in the time she spent with us and has written up about her experience working with Kampuchea Balopp in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
I have been privileged to have had the opportunity to spend two weeks working with Kampuchea Balopp in March 2014. In this time, I travelled with Coach Trainer and Program Development Manager Jean-Baptiste and his team of skilled Khmer coaches, Khemrin, Ra, Khemara and Pheary. I also worked with Anna-Maria Nugent (Fundraising coordinator) on providing some English lessons to the Cambodian coaches.
Training takes place at several locations in Phnom Penh where the team coaches rugby to disadvantaged children. The highlight of the experience was being able to share in the fun and play rugby with the kids who have boundless energy and a willingness to learn. It wasn’t until I was participating in the training sessions that I began to appreciate the true value of the work this French/Cambodian NGO does.
On its most fundamental level, Kampuchea Balopp brings happiness and fun to the lives of underprivileged kids by giving them the opportunity to play rugby regularly where they would not otherwise be able to.
The enthusiasm with which the kids play and the admiration and respect that they have for their amazing coaches is testament to just how much this experience means to them. The physicality involved in the tackling is something that these energetic kids particularly enjoyed; both the boys and girls.
Finally, rugby brings out the competitive spirit in these beautiful and enthusiastic children. In speaking with the coaches, it is apparent that they strive to teach more than rugby though. They hope to have a long term impact on the children’s lives by showing them the value of cooperation and hard work.
That is the benefit of Kampuchea Balopp training up Khmer coaches to run these clinics. Having grown up in similar conditions as the kids they teach, Khemrin, Ra, Khemara and Pheary are role models for the children who show that sport is both a productive pastime to improve fitness and quality of life.
In all, I felt very lucky to have worked with Kampuchea Balopp. Everyone is so committed and so enthusiastic about their work with these beautiful children that it is hard not to be affected by their comradery, passion for teaching rugby and making a difference. Kampuchea Balopp’s investment in the futures of Cambodian children makes it well worth getting behind in any way possible.

Over the past two weeks, Kampuchea Balopp’s Program Development Manager, Jean-Baptiste Suberbie, was invited by France Volontaires, a French NGO that assists French volunteers finding work in places such as Cambodia, to attend some workshops with four different universities in Phnom Penh to talk about his volunteering work, what brought him to Cambodia and ultimately help establish Kampuchea Balopp in 2013.
Since the establishment of Kampuchea Balopp, France Volontaire has assisted Kampuchea Balopp in connecting with many of our partner NGO’s.
JB talking to the students about Kampuchea Balopp
The four universities at which JB gave presentations were the RUPP (Royal University of Phnom Penh), the UHS (University of Health Sciences), the URBA (Université Royale des Beaux Arts), and the RULE ( Royal University of Law and Economic). The aim of presentations was to inform the local Cambodian students about volunteering and how the the opportunities to volunteer are also available to Khmers in other countries and gain invaluable experience.
JB was able to explain to the students about his experiences and that he also decided after his studies to engage himself with a social mission in Cambodia through rugby and youth development which resulted in the formation of Kampuchea Balopp. JB was able to explain in detail what Kampuchea Balopp is doing, why, and how and that as a NGO we need to remain dynamic to achieve our goals.
The presentations were well attended and the students found the talks very interesting and they asked some great questions that any social enterprise will have to deal with; “How do you fund your project?” , “How do you communicate with kids?”, “How can they try rugby?” and “What are the difficulties we face?”.
It was a very interesting discussion and a great opportunity to inform the students about the tough realities in Cambodia of allowing kids to have regular access to a structured team sport if you come from a disadvantaged background but it also allowed us to educate the students about the benefits of Youth Development through Sport.
Great work JB and thanks to France Volontaires for the opportunity all the students for attending the presentations!
